Early Skunk Cannabis Harvested

This Early Skunk Cannabis had to be harvested early. It’s always sad when you get so close to perfect but you must tell yourself that the Early Skunk must be harvested early. This is not something one does on a whim either. When I spot mold on a cannabis plant I do a 2-hour exam of the plant, and smoke a joint on it. lol  Heck, the darn plant finishes mostly in 55 days. When you are on day 50, you can see why the issue. Get 5 more days of growth, or risk more bud mold? Will the bud mold grow faster than the natural ripening of the plant will add weight by swelling up?

Early Skunk Cannabis

She smells unreal! She could stick to the side a jet going full speed. You can see from the photos the Early Skunk good looks. She’s a beaut’ no doubt. With just a little more time she woulda been a knockout. I always say that I know. This time I mean it just as much as when I said it other times.

In past, Early Skunk Cannabis harvested, the smell was so strong from the plants being hung and trimmed in the garage, that I have had the inside of my car smell like a sweet skunk. I have had a neighbor come by asking if I too had smelled a skunk in the area?  I, of course, told him I assumed it was something dead in the forest. There are no skunks in Hawaii. Or, not that I know of.

Trimming Cannabis Leads To Smoking Cannabis

After a weekend spent trimming cannabis to the point where my first 2 fingers and thumb on my right-hand can’t even grip a PlayStation 4 controller. It truly was a rough trim session. I was forced to take a free day on Monday to recover. The buds from this harvest even though mostly not fully mature, was, and is especially sticky. Just about every 5 mins. I needed to clean the scissors with alcohol. It was a major pain in the ass. I did manage to get a little finger hash as I progressed. It was phenomenal! I would have enjoyed that hash a little more had it not come with 3 lame fingers on my right hand. Had to sign my signature and couldn’t even grip the pen. For a while, I could not even use a lighter to get any smoking of cannabis done. lol

In the end, I did end up with a fair amount of really good trimmings for hash or oil making. Most likely it will be bubble hash. I don’t know about you.

But, I like bubble hash. I like to smoke bubble hash.  Screened down to 25 microns it’s pretty close to pure keif. When it bubbles and evaporates in a bowl, it is a fun sideshow while puffing. I’m not even gonna get into the high.

I like to take the hash and do a mini alcohol extraction kinda thing, It is basically just a recipe of putting bubble hash in 200 proof alcohol till dissolved, strain through a coffee filter, add to a flask, put the flask in hot water and most of the alcohol evaporates and the few tables spoons of liquid is a crude type of oil.  I just pour into whatever I making butter topical oil, candies, etc. It really mixes well. It is the best quick way using bubble hash to make gummies and hard candies. It’s not as good as co2 oil for candies but, it does a really good job.

Bubble Hash extract 1 Bubble Hash extract 2

I also normally at this point would be telling you about making co2 oil. You know, using supercritical co2 to extract all the good stuff from the cannabis buds, and what not. If I had a major surplus of fair to good buds that would go bad here in the humidity, is the best way to keep extra bud. Oil keeps longer and it really is the best for cooking. Holmgrown Farm does make its own CO2 or Honey oil. I am not really in a mood to go into that here right now. But here is a video for ya to see on that subject.

Yep, spent the whole weekend trimming bud. But, now is the fun part. After all the cannabis trimming has been completed, It’s taste test time! Taste test time is the bestest thing in the world. After 2 days of trimming the most stinky, sticky, buds of this year so far, I now get to burn it in all the best ways this can be done.

Before I do any smoking of a new harvest that is early harvested due to bud mold, I like to look at the buds to see what color the Trichomes are through a microscope. Most the time the Trichomes is clearish. The ideal is milky to amber colored. I would wait to harvest when there is about a 25% amber color to the Trichomes on the buds normally. That, in my opinion, is the sweet spot of maturity for harvest. If the Trichomes are too amber the effects will be more of a couchlock effect.  No amber color at all and your just not getting the best effect from the strain.

The excitement is a motivator like no other. After cleaning and a good hand washing, it’s time to test all the bud in a series of small fires. Let’s get to smoking cannabis.  Bong hits were first. Grabbed the best looking cherry Columbian Gold bud I could find. A quick run through the grinder, into the bong it goes. It was only 2 small bong hits and I was done smoking for the last 4 hours. Really, it was very strong. The smell is just lingering in the air inside the house. Everywhere you go throughout the house, it smells like a sweet incense is burning somewhere in the house. This really baffles me as all the windows are open and every room has a ceiling fan running on the med. setting.

Stoned And Playing With My Camara

I think the title of this post is pretty clear and to the point, no?  I am Stoned… And I’m playing with my camera. In case something was not clear enough… lol

Just got the first really good joint of Kilimanjaro bud harvested recently. (See: The Kilimanjaro Cannabis Has Been Harvested) I am happy to report that it works very well.

New Cannabis Seeds Planted Plant Rotation Planned

All is pretty calm here on Holmgrown Farm. Some of the new Cannabis seeds planted. I honestly do have much of an expectation on all but one of the varieties.  Yet, a free Cannabis seed, Is a free cannabis seed. Know what I’m saying? I hope I am wrong about what my expectations are. I hope that all 4 seeds turn out to be the best of the best I have ever grown. I ask you to take a look at what seeds I have chosen. Come up with your own idea of how things will go.

Cannabis Seeds

Holy Grail Kush – All I know about these cannabis seeds is the lip service from the breeder. Honestly, the breeder mostly just bragged about having this be an entry and winner into some cannabis cup like things. They did manage to say about the seeds that the plant is mostly indica. Welp, I am pretty sure this is not gonna do well if its not a dry period while she grows.

Cirtical+ 2.0Cirtical+ 2.0 – I have grown these cannabis seeds before here in Hawaii. It turned into a huge plant with long buds that yielded in total 7ozs. of kick-ass, bud that’s effects can only be described as mind-numbing. That was during a dry growing period. Probably not gonna be a dry period when she’s old enough to go out.

Sour Diesel Auto – This is a Sativa dominant strain. It could do very well. It’s a Sour Diesel#2 x Ruderalis. It being an auto strain, I don’t see myself cloning it. Hope it all works out, really. Who does not love sour diesel??

Brazil AmazoniaBrazil Amazonia – Grown this one many times. This is a standard of the Cannabis Seeds planted here on Holmgrown Farm.  This one handles the humidity really well. Of the 20 seeds, I have planted 5 ever developed issues with mold or mildew. The smell is crazy good too!

Cannabis Reday For RotationThis post is: New Cannabis Seeds Planted Plant Rotation Planned. So, let’s get the plant rotation part. There are these 2 lovely ladies from Africa & South America I am planning to put in the garden where the other 2 lovely ladies from Africa & South America were. If you have been following Holmgrown Farm, you know these are a Columbian Gold and a Kilimanjaro.

I will need to turn the bed and clean it up a little. Going to add a small amount of manure and bonemeal mixed in this time. I am not going to add more lime. I only add lime once a year. I do add manure and bonemeal during each rotation of cannabis plants. That goes for peppers, watermelons, and tomatoes grown here on Holmgrown Farm.

Outdoor Cannabis Garden Rotation

The plant rotation planned for the first week of Oct. As you can see in the photo the Cannabis plants are getting pretty close to be potbound in this 3gal. pots. They are really starting to show signs of it by the yellowing leaves.

My Least Favorite Part of Cannabis Growing

Cannabis growing is a mostly rewarding thing. Most of the work involved in growing my own cannabis I have no issues with. Yet it would be a lie to say that everything associated with cannabis growing I enjoy. As with anything worth doing, there are chores that cannot be escaped from.

It is not the job of mixing compost, manure, lime, or bone meal into the soil. Sure, when this needs to be done it is a little bit of work. It does take all day to mix all the garden beds up and get them to the ideal mix for cannabis growing. This job is a little stinky, and in the Hawaiian sun & humidity can test your strength.

It is not the constant monitoring of water, nutes, bugs, mildews, molds, weather damage, animals, oh the list is long of things that will affect the full cycle of cannabis growing. This is really one of the most pleasurable jobs of cannabis growing here on Holmgrown Farm. Most mornings are spent having a coffee and a smoke with the plants. This gives me the opportunity to do the constant monitoring that needs to be done daily. In the evening as the sun is close to setting I again spend some time doing the monitoring thing while relaxing after the stress of the day.

If all goes well during the growing cycle of the cannabis, and the buds are all hard and stinking with large bulbs giving real weight the buds, we come to harvest. Yes, harvesting is my favorite thing of all of it. I love when the plant rubs on my clothes or skin and I get to walk around for an hour or so smelling like a cannabis plant. Who the heck that grows cannabis does not this job the most? After months of work and stress, you get to cunt the plant down. The ultimate goal of Cannabis growing.

Now we’re at the hanging drying job of cannabis growing. After trimming all the big fan leaves, hanging the cannabis plants to dry, you still need to keep a fan blowing on the plants. In a week or two its ready for the least favorite job on Holmgrown Farm

Trimming bud is the final step in cannabis growing. Detest this part of the job. I have to struggle to get through this part. Sometimes it takes me 3 days longer than it should. Between procrastination and allowing myself to be distracted while doing the trimming the job just seems to take forever. The scissors gum up then must be cleaned. Fingertips get super sticky. Then the monotony of the job just makes one wanna stop doing it. I also have the bad habit of going along, seeing a pretty bud, then needing to smoke it then and there. This leads to a situation of smoke 2 buds trim one. This lasts until I’m so high I end up being distracted and start doing something else entirely.

No Stems, No Seeds, You Don’t Need.

Do you know the old chant?: “No stems, no seeds you don’t need. Acapulco Gold is kickass weed!
“Well, that does not apply to the Cannabis plants cut down the other day due to bud mold here on Holmgrown Farm. You’d think when you chop plants down early that seeds are the one thing that is not going to be an issue. Not so for at least one Early Skunk Cannabis plant.

seeds in marijuana bud

It appears that there is either a male somewhere in the area or, dare I type it? It was a hemorphidite. Now I am not so sure that I can contribute my seeds in the bud to a male plant growing in my area. I am going to say it’s most likely a hemorphidite, sadly. It happens and one could always look at the bright side and say, “free seeds” Yet who knows of the plants from these seeds are any good. I’m not saying I won’t plant them and see how it goes, just that I am not expecting too much from them.

That brings me to a recent event. I was contacted about a friends relative that was going to start growing Medical Cannabis. They were searching online cannabis seeds and then became overwhelmed and confused. Some of those online seed banks can throw 1000’s of seeds at ya with little to no real information about what the seeds will produce and what environment the plants from those seeds is ideal. I am not saying that there is no information when looking at the seeds description if you don’t know Indica from Sativa or Ruderalis you really kinda screwed. I guess to add hybrid would be even more confusing, no?

In case you do not know the differences between them, I’m going to tell you what I know about the different types of cannabis.

Indica Sativa Ruderalis  Photo Credit: LIWTS – https://www.liwts.org

Cannabis Sativa:

This is the one I like to grow and smoke the most here on Holmgrown Farm. Cannabis Sativa tends to grow tall (10-15ft. is not unheard of) and looks like a Christmas tree if it’s not pruned or tied down. The leaves are normally long and skinny. Cannabis Sativa has a long flower time 12+ weeks is not unheard of. These plants are often from the equatorial (near the equator) areas of the world. Think Thailand, Columbia, Indonesia.

The effects of smoking, eating, etc. Cannabis Sativa is an invigorating, creative type of high. this is not the type of Marijuana that makes you get stuck to a couch and daydreaming at the TV. Cannabis Sativa is very high in THC cannabinoid. This is why you may feel you get energy using a Sativa. Sativas also mostly have a citrus smell. Some even describe it as fruit smell.

Cannabis Indica:

Cannabis Indica is not a tall plant like the Sativa. Most Indicas grow at best 6tf. tall but are very bushy. Its leaves are short and fat. Indicas also flower very fast 50 days for some to fully mature. Cannabis India also tends to be the ones to make the skunk smell associated with Marijuana.

When one thinks about being stoned, it is the effects of Cannabis Indica that comes to one’s mind. A person melted in a couch eating Cheetos and drinking a coke. The reason for this is that Indicas have a sedative effect on the body. And can relax some so much they fall asleep.

Cannabis Ruderalis:

Nobody really says much about Cannabis Ruderalis. It mostly grows only about 3ft tall at its best. It can still be found growing wild in northern areas of the world. The Cannabis Ruderalis plant flowers very fast and is not psychotropic at the levels of Cannabis Sativa or Cannabis Indica. This strain is used to make Hybrids that can handle colder weather better. See Hybrids for more information.

Hemp or Industrial Hemp is a verity of Cannabis Sativa, is used for making a myriad of products like rope, clothes, food supplements, etc. Industrial Hemp will not get you high it’s THC level is below 0.3%.

This is where you take the different strains of cannabis and breed them together to make a better plant for different conditions. Mixing an Indica and a Sativa might produce a tall bushy plant. Thereby taking all little of the characteristics of each strain.

2018 Harvest Video Columbian Gold Strain

Today I was not surprised to find bud mold on a Columbian Gold strain. This tall girl was only really days away from the perfect harvest time. What can ya do? I would have liked to make it all the way through to the best harvest time. It”s just that this is the way it goes growing outdoors in Hawaii. Instead of word typed in this post, I’m just gonna use video.

I can’t wait to have it dried out and ready for trimming. I also have it on good authority that this Columbian Gold will make phenomenal bubble hash. The good thing is that this gave me a good reason to make my 2018 Harvest Video.

Hope you enjoyed the videos. Make sure to vote on which strain we start and do a grow journal for it exclusively.

The Kilimanjaro Cannabis Has Been Harvested!

Holmgrown Farm has harvested the big ass Kilimanjaro cannabis strain we had growing. The buds have bulbs of goodness and although it could have done with maybe another 5 days of bud swelling time. The humidity around here is 90% for a past 2 days and is expected to be the same for at least a few more days more, with a strong chance of rain. If you have seen my last post: When An Equatorial Landrace Sativa Molds, You know that I have had a little bud mold just starting on this Kilimanjaro plant at 2 places. Instead of being greedy and hoping that the high humidity is not going to make the bud mold worse, I decided to take her down and be happy with what I have now. There’ll be others. There are always others. Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain5

This Kilimanjaro cannabis strain is one of my favorites. This strain has the ability to be super energetic. Really! This strain will work better than a cup of coffee. If I have a cookie or smoke a couple bong hits of this Kilimanjaro cannabis the buzz is so happy and energetic that I can mow the lawn, weed the gardens, pressure washes the roof and it seems like nothing. Rumor is that the tribes in Africa where this strain comes from on the slopes of Kilimanjaro on the Kenya side call it “elephant Stomper” do it its effects. I only half believe that. But it sure as hell makes for a good marketing pitch.. lol

Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain4

This strain does very well here on Holmgrown Farm in our area of the island. It’s a “plant it and forget it” type of cannabis plant. Not hard on fertilizer and bugs don’t seem to attack it too much. I mean, bugs are a real factor here. But, not too hard on this strain. The smell of the bud is like a lemony fruit. The buds will mostly get rock hard. In drier growing times they can also get a fair size to them. This one did not produce major sized buds at all. It also has only seen the sun directly for 20 of the past 60days. The rest were all rainy days.

The grow time outdoors here on Holmgrown Farm is pretty quick for a sativa. Most the times it’s never more than 70 days from the clone being placed outside until harvest. It has been as few as 60 days a lot. why one way or the other? See, I don’t use clones of clone more than 4 gens. from seed. I hear all the time that its a silly practice. I’m not saying it isn’t per se. I can only say that any of the strains just don’t seem to produce as strong of buds past the 4th gen of clone from seed. I have no proof. So please don’t bitch at me about how I am wrong. It’s just what works for me.

Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain2 Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain1

Trimming this Kilimanjaro cannabis strain is a breeze. It’s not too leafy and only needs a mild trim after hanging. Plus as an added bonus, you get to smell the exquisite aroma of these flowers. I cannot rave on enough about the smell. It’s not the kind of cannabis smell that hits ya as you walk in a room. No, it’s more of an open a bag and huff. A bag full of these buds gives off an intoxicating smell of their own. I have found myself dreaming of walks in the woods when I have closed my eyes and opened a bag of this Kilimanjaro to my nose.Kilimanjaro Cannabis Strain3

Update: When An Equatorial Landrace Sativa Molds

The sun has set, I am having another cappuccino. I have also come to the conclusion after thoroughly inspecting the Columbian Gold girl that there are just too many areas with bud to just trim the bud mold out. I am very sad about this as the buds were soo close to being at the sweet spot for harvesting. Before I go on if you missed the last post: When An Equatorial Landrace Sativa Molds Go read it. I’ll wait for ya.

Columbian Gold Close Up
This is a close up of the premature Columbian Gold bud.

Grabbed the clippers and with a tear, cut this incredible smelling Columbian Gold down in the squeeze of the clippers. The smell of this plant gets all over my arm as I support her with one hand and clip her at the base with the other. Even as I type this now, the smell of her still lingers around me. I notice occasionally that my hair smells of her and I become reflective of the past few months of her care, all the way back to clipping her as a clone form her mother.

If you are really looking at the posted photos, I want to assure you that this bud smells better than it kinda looks. You can see in the photos of this Columbian Gold, she was just starting the swell and resend cycle. 2, maybe (this is a big maybe) 3 more weeks and holy moly! I promise that even now this is going to me mind-numbing cannabis to smoke or eat.

All is not gloomy. Still have 1 Early Skunk, 1 Kilmajaro, 1 Columbian Gold going strong. Maybe the humidity and rain will go away and come back in about 3 months but for an evening shower once a week.

When An Equatorial Landrace Sativa Molds

Kilamanjaro strain bud
Got up, went out to the garden for my morning joint and cappuccino with the girls. Knowing that there is only landrace Sativas out there I was confident that mold would not be an issue. As I walk down the pathway to the gardens the overpowering sweet, sweet smell of citrus and musk (others describe it as wood smell) envelops me creating a very relaxing mood.

The smile I am sure was on my face as I approached the first plants to find them budding healthily was lost in the turn of a head. Passing the first garden beds and approaching the second, I see as soon as my eyes focused on the big Columbian Gold girl, that nasty ass brown bud mold… To say I was crushed is an understatement. I just could not believe my eyes! This strain has NEVER, EVER, molded on me here in Hawaii before. The Columbian Gold always finishes for me. Some even suggest to me I should harvest them sooner.

Columbian Gold Plant columbian Gold bud mold
columbian Gold mold columbian Gold mold 2

I feel a slight feeling of panic. If the Columbian Gold is molding, what about the Kilimanjaro strain? Walking over to check on them I am saddened to say that the big Kilamanjaro plant has a bud with slight mold starting to grow. The Kilimanjaro has molded on me in the past. But the bud mold was always so small you don’t see it till the first trim of the big fan leaves before hanging. Not this time. Oh no. This Kilimanjaro strain is a landrace Sativa. But from Africa and well, not all of Africa is a humid tropical environment.  But the high is in my opinion only 2nd to the Lambsbread strain from Jamaica.

Yet this Columbian Gold is an equatorial landrace Sativa. It is not supposed to mold in humid environments. It comes from a majorly humid environment. I have a theory on why this Columbian Gold did mold when never has before. If you live in lower Puna on the Big Island you are going to understand. It all has to do with the fissures still pumping out VOG. Over the past month, we have had the sulfur smell in the air a few times here on Holmgrown Farms. I can’t help but wonder if my bud mold issues are not a result of or, at a minimum the top contributing factor for the bud mold.

Kilamanjaro strain 2
Kilimanjaro Strain

Kilimanjaro Strain Bud Mold

I also can’t help but think that if Holmgrown Farm is having this issue, are others? I’m gonna go out on a limb and say, “YES”. I have heard several individuals claim that it has become hard to find Medical Cannabis here on the Big Island right now. You have to remember that there are no open dispensaries on this area of the island and the first one is not to open until Nov. of this year. We will see if that pans out.

I don’t want to end this When An Equatorial Landrace Sativa Molds post on a down note. Let’s try and leave this on a positive happy note. That said, let us look at the Columbian Gold that is not showing signs of mold and has sweet-smelling nugs on it. She’s a tall girl standing 6 feet., her buds reek of lemon and butt. lol
